There is a wealth of knowledge in books, magazines and online today on how to fish for trout, etc.. Most of this information is overwhelming to a beginner fishermen. I thought it would be a good idea as a VT Fishing Guide to break down three simple ways to catch more trout that anyone can use.
1. Inline Spinners
Have you ever wondered what is the favorite food of trout? Small baitfish is a huge part of a trout’s diet. This type of bait becomes even more important as the trout get larger. That is why inline spinners work so well. They are one of the all-time bait imitators that drive trout crazy. Inline spinners are easy to cast and for the most part, don’t get snagged up in the weeds. One that we like is Worden’s Rooster Tail.
2. Streamers & Nymphs
Many fly fishermen get caught in the myth that a dry fly is the best bait to catch trout, that isn’t true. If you only fish with dry fly’s then you are going to end up fishing more and catching less. Streamers and nymphs and many other sub-surface foods actually make up most of the trout’s diet. Scuds, Woolly buggers, Soft Plastic Nymphs are all excellent for catching trout. Mix it up a little, don’t just rely on dry fly’s altogether.
3. Live Bait
Live bait is the traditional bait used by fishermen for generations. Trout go crazy for live bait. Presenting worms, night crawlers, minnows or even crawfish will cause them to strike hard. This is the choice bait for beginner fishermen. When you setup your line, use a simple split-shot rig with a minnow or nightcrawler. This most often will do the trick in helping you catch some trout.
